What does ICAO Level 6 mean?
Level 6 is called Expert – in ENAC documents, the Italian term is «Esperto». You communicate naturally, precisely and effortlessly in almost all situations: on unfamiliar topics, under pressure or when something unexpected happens. You choose your words precisely and with nuance, and adapt tone and pace to the context.
Do I have to sound like a native speaker?
No. The ICAO Rating Scale does not require you to sound like a native speaker. Pronunciation, stress, rhythm and intonation may be influenced by your first language or your region – what matters is that they almost never interfere with understanding. An audible accent does not stop you from reaching Level 6.
What does Level 6 require?
- Pronunciation: almost never interferes with understanding, even if your accent is audible.
- Structure: basic and complex sentence patterns consistently well controlled.
- Vocabulary: broad, precise and idiomatic, on familiar and unfamiliar topics, and suited to the register.
- Fluency: natural and effortless, even at length; you use pace deliberately, for example to stress a point.
- Comprehension: accurate in almost all contexts, including linguistic and cultural subtleties.
- Interactions: at ease in almost all situations, picking up verbal and non-verbal cues.
How is Level 6 awarded?
You take the open Level 4–6 test. Each of the six criteria gets a rating, and your overall level is the lowest one: you receive Level 6 only if all six criteria are at 6. If even one stops at 5, the result is Level 5, with re-evaluation after 6 years.
Every test is rated twice: by your examiner and by a language expert (LPLE) from LTB 112. The tasks are described in detail in how the ICAO test works.
You can’t buy Level 6 – you have to show it. You don’t need a previous Level 4 or 5 to try, whether for an initial assessment or a renewal. If your performance isn’t enough for 6, you receive the level you have shown.
Does Level 6 ever expire?
Not within the EASA system: FCL.055 (c) requires periodic re-evaluation for Levels 4 and 5, but not for Level 6. ENAC’s NI-2020-027 also sets intervals only for the «Operativo» (Operational) and «Avanzato» (Extended) levels (NI-2020-027, in Italian ).
| Level | ENAC term | Re-evaluation |
|---|---|---|
| Level 4 | Operativo (Operational) | every 4 years |
| Level 5 | Avanzato (Extended) | every 6 years |
| Level 6 | Esperto (Expert) | no periodic re-evaluation |
On an Italian licence, the level is endorsed by ENAC: under NI-2020-027 (§ 10), the endorsement shows the language, the proficiency level and the validity date. Our ENAC endorsement guide explains how to submit your certificate.
Outside the EASA system, other rules may apply – for example if a non-EASA state validates your licence. In that case, check that state’s rules. More in validity and renewal.
How do you prepare for Level 6?
- Speak naturally, not from memory. Rehearsed phrases stand out; spontaneous, precise answers convince.
- Show your range. Use nuance, comparisons and, where it fits, an idiom.
- Give full answers. In the interview you can develop your ideas calmly and in detail.
- React to details. Pick up on the examiner’s questions and cues.
- Stay precise with phraseology. Even at Level 6, correct read-backs and accurate listening to ATIS and ATC instructions count – QNH included.
Frequently asked questions about Level 6
What are my chances of reaching Level 6?
That depends only on your performance across the six criteria: without hearing you speak, nobody can make a serious prediction. For an honest assessment, book the 45-minute training (€69) or the 20-minute PreCheck (€19). Test preparation
I already have Level 5 – is Level 6 worth trying?
If you feel very confident, yes: with Level 6 there is no more periodic re-evaluation. If you don’t reach 6, you receive the level that matches your performance.
How much does the Level 6 test cost?
Level 6 is only available in the open Level 4–6 test, at €229 incl. VAT. Any surcharges (e.g. on public holidays) are shown in the calendar before you book.
Is Level 6 valid for life?
Within the EASA system, FCL.055 sets no periodic re-evaluation for Level 6. Outside EASA, or where an employer has its own requirements, different rules may apply.
